aPACK was developed to be a compressor for 16-bit DOS executables. It can compress .exe and .com programs while keeping them executable.
Most DOS executable compressors use a standard depacker for every file, however parts of the depacker are not required or can be optimized for certain executables. aPACK produces a specifically optimized depacker for every executable it compresses.
aPACK has ranked as one of the best 16-bit DOS executable compressors for years.

aPACK is a DOS executable compressor that creates smaller compressed exes as well as a depacker for every executable it compresses. Unlike other popular executable compressors, aPACK is designed to create smaller compressed executables as well as a depacker. (requires manual depacker and memory)
How it Works:
1) Decompress and automatically rename the exe or com file.
2) Edit the namespace and compression section of the exe or com file using aPACK’s text editor.
3) Compress file using aPACK’s built-in compressor.
4) Confirm the file was compressed successfully.
5) After successful compression, the program will automatically rename the compressed file and output the new filename. aPACK will also output a depacker for the program.
6) Delete the compressed file and rename the original file.
7) Rename the compressed file using the new filenames.
8) Remove the aPACK launcher if you installed it using the aPACK.INI file.
9) Launch the aPACK launcher and use the optional parameters to specify an output filename.
10) Optional – launch the aPACK launcher and use the optional parameters to specify an output filename.
11) Compress an executable
12) Confirm the executable was compressed successfully.
13) Delete the executable and rename the original file.
14) Compress a second executable
15) aPACK will automatically download the new aPACK launcher if the current launcher is more than three versions out of date.
16) Launch aPACK’s launcher with all the optional parameters.

aPACK is a DOS compressor. It compresses.exe and.com programs with standard DEP/DUP/RUN PDS DPMI executables. The end result is a 9.6%-10.0% smaller.exe.

The current version of aPACK can pack as well as unpack between 5 and 30 executables at the same time.
Most of the 16-bit compressors with.exe support do not support.com programs in addition to.exe. aPACK’s.com segment allows easy decompression of all.com programs.
A companion program is also provided to read.COM files in a standard way for DOS platforms.
aPACK is also one of the first compressors to support some of the segments in the COFF segment of executables.
aPACK programs can be unpacked to executables in DOSBOX or PPSSPP.
Programs with.com segment and without.com segment can be unpacked.
When extracting.exe, aPACK includes the DEP/DUP/RUN macros and the.com segment in the output file.
If the.com segment and DEP/DUP/RUN macros are not present in the output file, the size of the output file is used as the size of the.com segment.
aPACK can read the contents of the COFF segment when packing.com segments. aPACK can also read the first and last bytes of the COFF segment to assist the packing process.
The original aPACK is part of JCHrDOS 4.9x from 1991.
